THE ISLANDS OF DOGS
From the beginnings of their history, the Canary Islands have had a very close relationship with the world of dogs.
The name of the archipelago derives from the Latin canis and makes reference to two large mastiffs the first discoverers of the islands captured there in the year 40BC. This historic event is reflected on the islands’ coat of arms.
BEFORE STARTING YOUR HOLIDAY
If you’re thinking of travelling with your pet, there are a number of things you should take into consideration before leaving home. It is important to make sure that you book accommodation where pets are allowed. You must also ask your vet for a travel certificate for your pet.
Also remember that when you book your airline ticket you must read the airline’s policy and the conditions under which your pet must travel.
PETS ON THE ISLANDS
When you are on the islands you should be aware that in most public places it is compulsory to keep your pet on a leash and that some breeds also have to wear a muzzle. There are also areas specifically assigned for domestic animals where your pet can enjoy a little more freedom.
In the event that you need to consult a vet, there are many veterinary clinics on all of the islands.
ACCOMMODATION WITH PETS
More and more top class hotels on the islands are willing to accommodate guests who bring their pets with them. Quite a few of them also offer small welcome kits with all the basics for their holiday.
