San Sebastian de la Gomera

Historic sites of Columbus’s voyages

Located in the east of La Gomera, the capital of the island is a peaceful town with a long history. San Sebastián is characterised by its many low Canarian-style houses as well as its more modern administrative buildings. The town’s main attractions are related to the voyages of Columbus in the years surrounding his discovery of the Americas. The Conde tower, built as a Spanish fortress in the 15th Century and the beautiful sacred art of the Asunción church have been magnificently maintained.

Pre-Columbian Art and shopping amongst plazas and terraces

A visit to the old town of San Sebastián de La Gomera should include a trip to the Casa Colón museum, which houses a collection of pre-Colombian art from Peru; Casa de la Aguada, with its permanent exhibition on the discovery of America; and the chapel of San Sebastián, which is dedicated to the town’s patron saint. Finish off your day with some shopping and a snack in one of the many terraces in the historic centre, where you’ll find the popular local biscuits.

Sustainability
Sostenibilidad
- Never leave waste of any type lying around, including cigarette butts. Leftover food leads to a proliferation of rats and wild cats, which pose a serious threat to the fauna.
- Do not throw any waste or other objects into the sea.
- Respect the animals. Do not bother them or feed them. If you see an injured specimen, you can call the emergency number: 112. Do not pick flowers or plants.
- Do not pick up or take away stones or any other item from the natural environment. And do not move them to pile them up into sadly famous 'towers'.
- Respect and look after the area's historic and cultural heritage, along with the different items of public furniture (information panels, railings, seats, lighting, etc.).
