(CACT) San José Castle

Visit the International Museum of Contemporary Art of Lanzarote

From military fortress to International Museum of Contemporary Art thanks to the artistry of César Manrique, San José Castle is an elegant fort where modernity and fine cuisine are savoured while contemplating the distinctive sea of Lanzarote. On its XVIII century stone walls hang works by Tàpies, Miró, Alechinsky and Millares. Located on the east of the island, this centre of art which is accessed by a drawbridge, is a museum, a restaurant and undoubtedly a uniquely representative place in the town of Arrecife.

A restaurant with Manrique’s signature in Arrecife

Once you go through the imposing entrance gate, everything bears Manrique’s signature, the domed room housing the permanent exhibitions, the exquisite gardens of lava and palm trees or the perfectly white tubular stairs on the lower floor where the restaurant is located. Elegant and very modern, it delights with creative Canarian cuisine, delicious fresh tapas in a curved glazed room where stone, wood and hanging plants allow the starring role to be taken over by the beautiful evocative views of Arrecife harbour.
