The place that housed the Virgin of Candelaria

The Cave of the Virgin is located five minutes from the center of Tijarafe and is known for being the refuge of the image of the Virgin of the Candelaria centuries ago. It is not known exactly how long this cave housed the sacred image, since the temple that houses it today was built in 1530. What is known is the legend of how its representation reached the cave. According to the story, centuries ago the Virgin of the Candelaria was embarked to Puntagorda. However, every time the sailors put to sea, the weather took a sharp turn for the worse. Finally they realized that the Virgin did not want to be moved, so they transported her inland and placed her in the cave that today bears her name.
