Lagarto Gigante de El Hierro Recovery Centre

The giant lizard, a species unique to El Hierro

The El Hierro giant lizard (galliota simonyi) is native to El Hierro. Despite the significant presence of the reptiles on the Canary Islands, the species is, in fact, currently in danger of extinction. The Recovery Centre is located within the Guinea Eco museum, in Frontera. Visitors are encouraged to find out more about the push for giant lizard conservation during guided tours which take place every day of the year between 10 am and 6 pm.

More than a museum

The El Hierro giant lizard is an impressive sight, with its dark body and length of up to 60 centimetres. At the recovery centre, lizards are bred in a controlled manner and then set free in the wild to boost population numbers. Guides are available on site to inform visitors of interesting information about lizards. There is also a gift shop for people to take home a souvenir.
