LATEST NEWS: Coronavirus (COVID-19) here
We arrive as the sun is setting in El Cotillo with the beautiful evening reds and oranges of the sun sweeping through the fishing village.
We pull up to our accommodation, it is an amazing location we are right on the idyllic picturesque beach and I am already feeling relaxed. This is going to be a weekend to remember.
El Cotillo is traditionally a fishing village in the north west of Fuerteventura. It is home to some of the most beautiful beaches on the island. It started as a small fishing village and has kept it’s small fishing village vibe as it has grown into a tourist paradise. Weather you would like a week surfing, kite-surfing or your time is spent relaxing by the beach and cafés, El Cotillo has all you need.
Our Accommodation, Cotillo Lagos is right on the beautiful white sand beach, you really could not be any closer.
The check in was quick and simple and within minutes we were at our room. The room was facing towards the ocean and the light sea breeze is being pushed gently into our room. We walk out from our room and see the Lagos and ocean inlets that make up the beaches of El Cotillo.
We take a moment for a quick freshen up and swap from shoes to flip-flops and leave the apartment to find dinner. We walk out onto the sand and turn right enjoying the last of the sun and head to Azzurro restaurant, it reads as a restaurant with local Canarian cuisine and live music and I can almost see it from the Cotillo Lagos accommodation.
We have come a little earlier than the Spanish dinner hours so we have the restaurant almost to ourselves. The waitress speaks good English. She does a great job at explaining the menu and we both choose the fish of the day a local white fish, Dorada I believe it was called. It was very fresh and cooked whole sliced open drizzled with Garlic and olive oil. Along side is served the canary style small potatoes boiled in very salty water and a salad, delicious. Also served with bread and the Canarian red and green Mojo sauces. We enjoyed it with a glass of wine and watched the final of the sunset, a prefect start to a relaxing weekend. As we leave the restaurant we are given an aperitif of the Canarian honey rum (Ron Miel), it is a must try. We didn’t stay long enough to see the live music and took the longer beach stroll back to the Cotillo Lagos apartment. Bliss.
Saturday started perfectly with a late start. We choose to have coffee and breakfast from Bagus.
Bagus had good coffee and a good selection of breakfast bocadillos with a good looking lunch menu as well. We then took in the sun for some time on the beach just out from the accommodation.
For the afternoon we decided to rent bikes and we headed off to the Museo de la Pesco Tradicional Fuerteventura (the Traditional Fishing museum).
It was an easy 10-minute bike ride. The museum was worth the visit and so was the scenery on the way. Some of the most beautiful white sand beaches of Fuerteventura are here. We stopped about half way back for a swim in the Lagos and watched the paddle boarders.
For the evening we had been recommend by a friend the Restaurant El Callao in the old town of El Cotillo just a short 11 minute walk from the Cotillo Lagos apartment. It over looks the marina and is more of a locals stop. The food did not disappoint although we did go for the Spanish iconic dish of paella, it was cooked to perfection and their selection of organic Canarian beers made for a very enjoyable evening.
On Sunday there was not a cloud in the sky and the wind was pleasant with a calm ocean so we decided to grab paddleboards and spend the morning paddling around the Lagos. The ocean was calm it would have also been an awesome day for a snorkel around the rocks.
We had a very relaxing weekend in El Cotillo and it will be a place we return when we have a time. We hope you have an amazing time when you get to stay yourself. Please let us know below if you have been to any of the places mentioned or if you have a favorite place in El Cotillo. Thank you for reading.
