LATEST NEWS: Coronavirus (COVID-19) here
Driving through Las Playitas Fuerteventura you would think it is a small quiet village with not much to offer, well you are correct in a way, it is sleepily but it has so much more to offer.
Las Playitas is perfect for the traveller that loves fish, seafood and wants a quiet relaxing vacation. But also would like to take time to enjoy the beaches and hike the mountains around the village. It also has its own little microclimate so is often hotter than the north of the island and away from the prominent wind.
If you have the time do come and stay in the village. Every time we have stayed in an Airbnb called Tortuga Piso it was an old building but newly decorated two bedroom apartment and the highlight was it was a 5 second walk to the beachfront, it’s the 2nd line of the beach the perfect location! Definitely recommend.
Las Playitas translates to small beaches. Now there is the old town fishing village in one bay and around the 2nd bay is the Las Playitas Resort. I recommend staying in the fishing village it’s beautiful quiet but you still can use the activities at the resort so it’s the best of both. Also if you stay at the resort you get music from fitness classes blasted very loudly at different times of the day so it’s not very relaxing, stay in the village it’s idyllic and the locals are always about to help to point you to the restaurants. The Las Playitas Resort markets as the best Fitness resort in Europe and with the 360 days of sun Fuerteventura is said to offer it has many athletes come and train in and around the village in the winter months.
For stunning sunset views I recommend taking a Tropical lemon favored beer (that’s a local Las Palmas beer) to the top of the mountain past the Las Playitas resort and watch the sunset over the village, Fuerteventura gets called the island of light and you will get to see why.
Las Playitas has it’s own Festival in June each year where it turns into a party town over two weekends, bands, beer tents and mojito bars for those who want a different view of the village and like to party definitely come and join the fun. The fiesta is for San Pedro the saint of fishing and on the final Sunday there is a parade with San Pedro that takes place. San Pedro is carried to the fishing boats owned by the village locals and is taken on one of the boats during the parade. Afterwards you are invited to come and eat fish with the locals. There is also a children’s day when they have bubble machines and a blow up slide into the water.
There are 5 restaurants in the Village of Las Playitas. There are two supermarkets in the village. A corner store and two coffee bars that service brunch to dinner and everything in between also a beach bar, that’s on the beach and sells cocktails and food.
I have two favorite restaurants one is called Restaurante Victor and has been here for almost as long as the village itself, they do the best seafood paella, make sure you call and book it though. If you get the right day you will also get fresh Tuna steaks that are melt in your mouth amazing. Also everyday there is a selection of fresh fish and you can ask how you wish to have it cooked. I’ve never managed a dessert there but they also look delicious. This restaurant is the culinary restaurant of the village possibly even for fish on the island.
My second favorite is because it has beautiful views and the food’s also to write home about. It’s called Restaurante La Playas and is right in the middle between the wharf and the beach. It has three levels so choose your angle of the beach you feel like watching over dinner. This restaurant is a canary style restaurant with Canarian potatoes, the mojo sauces all delicious it also has a good selection of wine. Don’t forget to try the honey rum, Ron Miel in Spanish.
When you next feel the need for a relaxing vacation definitely take a few days out in the little village of Las Playitas! It will welcome you with open arms.
