I would love to go to La Gomera again, for two reasons: Trail running and a romantic getaway. If I could combine the two, that would be even better.
La Gomera is not what you’d expect. It’s better. It is like no other Canary Island. With its magical, lush green ravines, majestic rock formations and ancient forests it is the fairy tale of the seven Canary islands.
“Grab your coat, leave a note and run away with me.”
A breathe of fresh air
“All good things are wild and free”
Living so many years on another Canary Island, the volcanic island of Lanzarote, which is spectacular in its own way, La Gomera is a contrast and a breathe of fresh air. Especially if you are a trailrunner. The green, the views, the valleys, the peaks and the rock formations.
It is unspoilt, black lava palm studded beaches, laurel trees in the magical forests and the banana plantations. With its microclimate it becomes a very interesting place to explore.
“Keep close to nature's heart” (John Muir)
“So if you love someone you should let them know”
The world writes about this little dot in the ocean as a spectacular, magical place. I can only agree. It’s a known fact that La Gomera is hiker’s heaven. What I experienced and realised visiting the island is that it’s such a perfect scene for romantic getaways. And trail running. Whether you are in love with nature, running or a partner. La Gomera oozes romance.
“I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order” (John Burroghs)
Could it be the windy roads, the green nooks and the spectacular hiking trails. Or is it the charming guest houses, the friendly people and the tempting restaurants. Maybe it’s simply the Canarian magical charm that is captivating and has people return?
“Hiking is a bit like life, enjoy the beauty along the way”
What is less known is, its not just a the perfect place for hiking and walking. Welcome to walkers paradise. La Gomera is heaven for trail running. Gomera Paradise is the biggest trailrace and it covers a beautiful part of the island starting from the capital San Sebastian in the east running through Parque Natural Majona.
“Will you stay, no I will take you along” (The ruminant writer)
La Gomera island is small enough to be covered in some days and big enough to discover something new every day. That’s what I love. The perfect destination for a romantic getaway. Rent a car, go with your loved one, get lost into the wild and explore. Having said that another thought that struck me is how well organised and marked the walking and hike trails are. As a trailrunner it is hard to get lost. Follow the trail and you will always find your way back or around. With spectacular views!
“Oh darling lets be adventures”
The windy roads are well paved but not for the faint hearted. With endless curves, tunnels and sheer drop offs if you are prone to being carsick - it is nice to sit in the front. Another thing that struck me, coming from open landscape Lanzarote, is that it feels like you are tucked in between the green ravines and the spectacular rock formations. Very charming!
This is the second smallest island of the Canary Islands and to get here you need to go via Teneriffe. But that’s ok. Part of the getaway is taking the ferry from Los Cristianos in Tenerfie and a 40 min crossing arriving at San Sebastian de la Gomera. Arriving at the Gomeran port is a change of pace and a welcomed contrast. You immediately get the feeling that this is the beginning of a lush, green and romantic getaway.
“There is no wifi in the forest but I promise you will find a better connection”
Hiking & Trailrunning
This island is well set up for hikers. Easy to find your way around. Routes that are clearly marked and little bed & breakfasts or smaller hotels in little nooks, used to having the active tourist come and stay. Because it is an island so well prepared for hikers. It is perfect for trailrunners too. In that way an unspoilt place for the person who loves active and outdoors - on the trails.
“I feel like part of my soul has loved you since the beginning of everything. Maybe were from the same star”
The island is not easy accessible in the sense that you need to travel windy roads and seldom in a straight line. But that’s ok. Just add enough time to get from A to B. That is part of the charm. Part of the Gomeran romance. Little nooks. Windy roads. There are plenty of small, hidden romantic hotels and they are more than just a guesthouse. You feel welcome and you meet other couples with the same thing in mind - active, together and nature. Maybe not the trail running but definitely the romantic getaway.
Popular but unspoilt
There have been written so many articles about La Gomera. And there is a reason.
Palms and peaks. Green ravines, some valleys. Ancient forests amongst the clouds and views of Tenerife’s El Teide. Steep, breathtaking trails. Hikers heaven, but how about trailrunners heaven too!
No matter where you are or who you’re with, enjoy long romantic runs in this green Canarian paradise known as La Gomera. The happiest I ever felt was that moment I discovered and understood this is the perfect active romantic getaway.
La Gomera in 3 words
If I were to describe La Gomera in 3 words it would be: green, lush and romantic. Next time I arrive here I hope it will be with a pair of running shoes and my loved one.
