Teno Alto

An isolated rural village in Tenerife

In the heart of the Teno Rural Park in the north-east of Tenerife and by way of a very winding road, you will find the hamlet of Teno Alto, a stronghold of the island’s rural traditions where silence reigns and where residents have adapted to their isolation over recent decades. Inhabitants are also delighted to welcome visitors, however, and are used to people making the journey to see their village.

The relative isolation of Teno Alto has meant the preservation of rich ethnographic traditions, such as the use of clay ovens, or 'eras', stone structures for threshing wheat. The traditional rural houses with thick walls and red roofs are also typical. Teno Alto invites you to discover its landscape through its many trails and walkways, and you mustn’t leave without trying the wonderful local goats’ cheese. Many visitors find themselves captivated by the place and choose to stay overnight in one of the several rural houses, where they can breathe in the peaceful tranquillity of Teno.

Sustainability

- Never leave waste of any type lying around, including cigarette butts. Leftover food leads to a proliferation of rats and wild cats, which pose a serious threat to the fauna.
- Do not throw any waste or other objects into the sea.
- Respect the animals. Do not bother them or feed them. If you see an injured specimen, you can call the emergency number: 112. Do not pick flowers or plants.
- Do not pick up or take away stones or any other item from the natural environment. And do not move them to pile them up into sadly famous 'towers'.
- Respect and look after the area's historic and cultural heritage, along with the different items of public furniture (information panels, railings, seats, lighting, etc.).
