Roques de Salmor

Natural spaces full of life

Brightening the landscape between Valverde and Frontera, Los Roques de Salmor is located northwest of El Hierro, in front of Punta de Arelmo. This group of rocks, 3.5 hectares wide, is home to a multitude of plant species and insects. In the past, El Hierro’s famous giant lizards of the simonyi subspecies lived in the vicinity. Now though it is a zone of special protection for birds.

An unusual spectacle

Because of the importance of the environmental protection work underway, visitors are unable to set foot on the rocks themselves, but they can observe the formations from the sea or from practically anywhere in the El Golfo Valley. Best views lie along a small path from Las Puntas to Playa del Cantadal where the Roques de Salmor – a miracle of natural erosion – stand high above the water, 350 metres away from the coastline.

Sustainability

- Never leave waste of any type lying around, including cigarette butts. Leftover food leads to a proliferation of rats and wild cats, which pose a serious threat to the fauna.
- Respect the animals. Do not bother them or feed them. If you see an injured specimen, you can call the emergency number: 112. Do not pick flowers or plants.
- Do not pick up or take away stones or any other item from the natural environment. And do not move them to pile them up into sadly famous 'towers'.
- Do not walk in areas where it is not allowed and respect the signposting along trails. Leaving the set paths causes damage to the environment and could also be dangerous for you and anyone with you.
- Do not light fires outside the permitted areas and be especially careful during the summer months.
- Try not to alter the peace of the environment with excessive noise (loud music, yelling, etc.).
